Pragmatism:
British,  European, and  the ancient Greek philosophies put the foundation of this philosophy .It began in United States of America at the late of 1800.

Pragmatists believed that teaching should pave the way for both teachers and students to be actively participating in teaching and learning processes.
‘Pragma’ means activity . The activity is done first then after this the results are concluded. The founders of pragmatism are C.B. Pearce, William James, Shiller and John Dewey.
.  Pragmatism is also known as experimentalism or consequentialism because pragmatists believe that experiment constitutes the truth. . To them ‘truth’, ‘reality’, ‘goodness’ or ‘badness’ are all relative terms.  .  Moreover, pragmatists believe that truths are many and are always changing  (Adeleye, 2017)

Principles of Pragmatism

The principles of pragmatism are: (Adeleye, 2017)

-The changing nature of truth: Pragmatists do not believe in absolute truths.  Truth always changes according to time, place and situation.
-Truth is formed by its results: change in situation leads to solve the problems by new way of thinking. This implies that, what is true is what has consequences.
-Democratic social value:  the teacher should understand the democratic value of the society
-Placing high premium on activity: They stress on the importance of activity and practice because it leads to verify the ideas
Influence of Pragmatism on Teaching and Learning
 (Adeleye, 2017)
Pragmatists generally believed that experience is the source of all knowledge, .Education relies on developing the ability to solve the problems.,. ,The growth of the learner’s intelligence is related to the ability to  solve complex problems.  The teacher according to the pragmatists should  prepare the student to solve their present problems.
Pragmatists criticized the traditional methods in education that has to be memorized and absorbed .Also, they said that the students wont feel motivated since their desires are not fully respected..
Accroding to pragmatism ,the school is a community that give the students chances to interact with a large community.
The curriculum in pragmatism, is related to the real life .Its authentic..  The curriculum  is based on three criterion:  psychological, the sociological and the logical.    The psychological is related to the interest, and the needs of the child to become an active member in the society.  .Planning of the experiences is the logical dimension. History, language, arts, drama, literature, music are to be included for the development of the creative abilities of the child.                                                                                                                                                                  According to them

Child discovers knowledge by himself.  .  ,.Each child is unique and has special abilities. The needs of the child should be satisfied. The child must be actively involved in the learning process.
Group method  is important because it can satisfy the child’s social needs and it fosters the child to freely express his mind and to think independently to find for different problems.
Teacher is essentially an organizer because it guides  the child’s learning activities.  Teacher must be aware of the individual’ needs and interest, Thus, the teacher is a participant in the learning activity. The teacher is required to create problems to be solved by the students to  develop their  intelligence .
