Learning Styles

Each student has a specific preferred learning style.
There are eight learning styles:

  1. Social:The students prefer to work and study together
  2. Solitary:The individual prefers to study alone.
  3. Musical/Auditory:The student prefer to hear things. The auditory learners are good in discussion. They are good in storytelling.
  4. Visual :The students prefer to see things. They like to see pictures .They like to take notes. They may not understand verbal instructions.
  5. Kinesthetic:They like to move. They like to carry physical activities. They can be easily distracted and they have short attention span.
  6. Logical/Mathematical:They are good in reasoning, analyzing, problem solving. They have the ability to think in abstraction.
  7. Verbal:The students like to use words. They like to read stories .They like to write. They are good communicators too.
  8. Combination:The learner mixes between two or more learning styles. The process of combination leads to success and development.
The role of the teacher is to implement different styles in her teaching process .It is highly recommended to use graphic organizer, and videos. In addition, teachers should encourage the student to participate in debates.

Who Am I?

Who Am I?
I am Mariam Hajj.I was born in Colombia.I currently live in Lebanon.
I spent my school years at Omar Al Mukhtar Education Center ,from preschool till secondary classes.
I have two birds :Micho and Marco.I love them a lot.

l I entered the faculty of law at Lebanese university. I enriched my knowledge with legal information.,I learned about the codes,customs,constitution,penalty....etc .
Then I entered Lebanese international University to study my second major in the field of education. I wasn’t planning to be a teacher but honestly I chose this major because it is well recommend to study in these days.
The Lebanese international University gave worth to ever single effort I did. In addition ,the university helped me to be more responsible and more organized. Managing the time and being able to organize are the key factors for success.
University gives the students chances to interact with others. In general, I am an introvert.I don’t like to talk or socialize with  people. The university helped me to  overcome this problem though enhancing my oral communications skills .
Besides,I learned through the help of the university  to appreciate and give value to teaching..I found that teaching is a bunch of professions   within the same profession. The teacher is the counselor, mentor, supporter, and a role model to the students.Teaching is really difficult job.
In addition,I met many instructors who guided me ;especially Dr,Barbara;she made love teaching. She showed me the real value of teaching.

Meaningful Learning

Meaningful Learning is a concept in which the learners understand the information deeply.Meaningul learning helps to store the information in the long term memory. It helps the students to make connection between prior information with new information.
Teachers are highly recommended to integrate meaningful learning in their teaching processes.Meaningful learning is totally different from rote learning.Rote learning is based on memorizing the information without deep understanding to the new information.
There are many techniques that the teacher can use to create a meaningful learning in the classroom. .It is highly important to develop the students'schemata with direct and indirect experiences. For instance, the teacher is expected to use many posters, graphic organizers, and pictures. The teacher can take the students to a filed trip. The teacher is expected to respect the learners' needs. Thus, the teacher is recommended to use different styles in  teachingAll these techniques can help the students to process, comprehend and retain the new information easily.

The Influence of Eastern and Western Philosophies on the Lebanese Curriculum

The Eastern and the Western Philosophy

The Eastern and the Western philosophy have both influenced the life of people. Both thoughts made vast contributions in different   fields  and domains.
The Eastern philosophy started around 5000 years ago.The Eastern philosophy is mostly  found in countries located in the east of Asia  like China.Japan,India,Iran and Mediterranean countries. The Eastern philosophy  stresses on the importance  of morals. It calls for  harmony and  stability. The religion and the philosophy are mostly attached. The eastern philosophy  refuses conflict and causing harm to others. They even prefer to preserve the traditions and to keep the status quo. (A History of Eastern Philosophy, 2016)They easterners care about communities and group as well.
The Western philosophy started in 6 BC.It is mainly based on three principles: change, development and competition. The philosophy of west leans toward change .In west, they are in favor for conflict .The westerners don’t  try to find a common ground. They call for individualism. The Western philosophy is based on logic and the use of reasoning. In addition, the religion and philosophy are detached.  (Eastern Vs.Western philosophy and metaphysics)

Now the question is :Is the Lebanese educational system is more in favor to the eastern philosophy  or western philosophy?

Changes in the Curriculum

The new Lebanese curriculum is established in 1997.The new curriculum calls for change in terms of teaching and learning .The new curriculum is stressing on the importance of cooperative learning and cooperations. The curriculum clearly  invites the teacher to change the class to be a student-centered classroom. The curriculum wants the students to be self-independent individuals. The new curriculum recommends the new teachers to imply meaningful learning while teaching. The new curriculum is calling to design activities to enhance the oral communications skills among the students. The new curriculum is calling the teachers to enhance their communications skills so the students can enhance their ability to communicate effectively. The new curriculum wants to develop the logical and reasoning skills of the students. (Principles Underlying The Curriculum) (Studies, 2006)
There are many changes in the curriculum .

Cooperative learning enhances the students ‘relationship and it helps to create a peaceful learning environment. Despite the fact that the  new Lebanese curriculum has clearly invited  the teachers and the educational institutions in Lebanon  to use cooperative learning in schools, but we can clearly see that there are few schools are starting to using cooperative learning. For instance ,Dr Rasha Halat,an instructor at Lebanese International University and an English teacher at JubJanin High school, used coopetive learning in her teaching process..However few schools are starting to integrate the idea of cooperation among the students.
Physical punishment was widely used in the Lebanese schools. The ministry of education in Lebanon prohibited the use of physical punishment in 1974.. Although the Lebanese law was very clear but many teachers  in Lebanon are somehow relying on the traditional methods in punishment . Bill Van Esveld, claims that 76 percent of schoolchildren in Lebanon have been physically punished by teachers. (Middle East schools struggle to stamp out physical punishment, n.d.)

Making an error is considered to be a sign of development in the west. However in Lebanon making errors is a sign of weaknesses. The majority of Lebanese teachers mock the students who make mistakes and they even shout at the student.

The new curriculum is calling for a change in terms of how to teach. Meaningful learning is starting to be widely use in Lebanese school. Last year I observed in kindergarten school, the teacher always used concrete materials, pictures, songs and posters. These methods reflected positively on how the student learned new concepts .It helps them grasp the information in their mind for long term.
Although the use of technology is still primitive in Lebanon but there are many schools like East-Wood school  (Khoury, 2018) and school of Broumana. are implementing technology .The technology is helping many students to find answers and do researches. In universities the technology is widely use. As an illustration instructors communicate with us online.
Both culture the east and west focused on moral and ethics. In Lebanon there are a major focus on social skills .We were taught not to lie, not to fight, and not to steal things. They told us to speak politely and use good words. We were taught to share things with our friends. They also read for us folk stories to learn important lessons in life  .

The educational institutions have changed a lot nowadays. The Lebanese schools are not hiring except teacher with degrees with a minimum two years of experience. In the past ,teachers were used to teach even if they don’t carry a degree.
The educational institution are promoting the teachers to update their knowledge. They are inviting the teachers to attend workshops so they can update their knowledge..In Omar Mukhtar Educational Center they made many workshop to enhance the teaching practices of the teacher.
From 40 year , there was no counselor in any Lebanese school.Nowadays, the Lebanese educational intuitions are hiring many counselors to help the students with psychological problems.  (Mukallid, Alamuddin, & Ayyash-Abdo, 2010).

After scanning all these examples mentioned above we can conclude that:
Lebanon is influenced from both philosophies.
In Lebanon ,the religion and philosophy are strongly attached to each other. In Lebanon we have 18 religion .Religion has an influence on our educational system we are more to the eastern philosophy.
Despite the fact the Lebanese educational system has changed a lot.For instance ,the Lebanese curriculum has changed and even the Lebanese schools and their educational policies have changed a lot but we can’t deny that these changes are  “theoretical changes”.The teachers, who are supposed to be the agents of change, aren’t fully committed to  what the curriculum has stated. The Lebanese teachers prefer to stay on the safe side. They like stability..Although some teachers are starting to do a vast changes but the numbers of those teachers are  countable
No society is static. Each society is changing. Changes are happening at a very low rate in Lebanon.I can deduce that Lebanon is more in favor to the east more to the west. The practices are changing  somehow but in very low tempo. How to Hold the Students'Accountability With Care?

The role of the teacher is to make the students feel responsible for their own actions. When the students are responsible for their own actions they will know their rights and their own duties inside the class.
Holding the students accountability is not an easy task. Many teachers in the world assume that they should act strictly with no mercy with the students to make them feel responsible for their own actions. Hence, strict relationship makes the students loses their trust on their teachers.
Making the students responsible for their own actions and embracing care can be  easily achievable .The teacher should teach the students that for every action there is an effect. The teacher should deliver consequences whenever opportunities allow to. At the same time ,the teacher is expected to maintain good relationship with the students through embracing enough love and care.
The teacher shows her care ,when she knows what the students like and dislike. Also,The teacher shows her care when she has high expectation of all the students. When the teacher embraces love and care the students will respect her.

Delivering consequences and showing compassion is the mother’s strategy to show her love to her kids. The same strategy is used by the consistent teachers; as an instance ,if the teacher spots two students talking then she can tell them that if they continue to talk then she will shift their seats. The students will   understand that shifting their seat is the result of their own actions.
In addition, to maintain a good relation with the students the teacher should avoid humiliation and punishment. Every teacher in the world should differentiate between punishment and consequences. Punishment causes long psychological scars on the students ,and it can lower the students’ enthusiasm and motivation to learn new things. However ,consequences is made for the leaner’s own benefits .Consequences makes the students aware that for  every action there is a reaction .Hence, it teaches them to behave  responsibly  by choosing the consequences of their own actions.
Punishment is effective for short term but it can literally make the students hates the teacher.

To sum things up teaching the students how to behave in a responsible way doesn’t mean that the teacher should show her mean face. Holding the students ‘accountability can be easily achieved when the teacher shows her compassion and her love to the students.

Interaction Theory for Language Development

There are three theories that have discussed the process of language development: behaviourist, innatist and interactional perspectives. Each theory has it is own principles and beliefs. Personally, I do support the interactional theory because it stresses on the role of the environment and the society to develop the language of the child.
The interactional theory focuses on the importance of exposing the child to the different aspects and elements found in the world. The exposure leads effectively to develop and build the children schemata about different topics. Moreover, this theory is aware of the developmental stages that the child passes through. The developmental stages define what the child is capable of at specific age.
Piaget states that the child learns through discovery and interaction with the physical word or the environment .This interaction leads to build the students schemata about different topics.
.
According to Vygotsky, the students’ learn through social interaction and if there is no interaction then this will hinder the language development process of the child. I do really agree with Vygotsky because when I took an online course to learn how to speak Spanish I failed to communicate effectively because there was no interaction with the society Social interaction is necessary to build the students ‘language.

It is good to mention that Vygotsky discusses the importance of scaffolding in language development. Scaffolding provides support to the students when they are in the process to learn something new. Scaffolding is necessary especially in the field of language acquisition because the children commit so many mistakes when they are newly acquiring a new language.
To sum things up, this theory stresses on the cognitive development of the child and on the importance of social interaction to develop and enhance the developmental processes of language acquisition .

Discipline Problems

Disciplinary Problems in the Classroom
Definition:

Cambridge dictionary defines discipline as “a training that makes people more willing to obey or more able to control themselves.”
A discipline problem is a behavior that interferes with the learning process.  It prevents the learners from learning.
Discipline aims to teach the students to have self-control. It teaches them to show respect to the educational authorities.
Discipline problems are one of the greatest concerns for educators. It is one of the most critical issues in education. Discipline problems make the teacher invest more time in management issues rather than delivering the curriculum objectives.
Types of Disciplinary Problems in the Classroom

-Students challenge the school rules
-Students show no respect to the teacher
-Defiance: Students refuse to listen to or follow the directions of the teacher
-Students’ use of verbal abuse
-Threatening
-Bullying: the practice of abuse to intimidate others
-Sexual harassment
-Students steal other students’ things and stuff
-Students fight with each other
-Students intentionally skip class
- Truancy: Absence from school
-Back talk
-Boycotting or interruption of the lesson
-lying
-Vandalism or destroying the properties of the school
-Drug abuse
-Assault or causing physical harm
-Insulting or scorning others
-Mocking

How To Deal With Discipline Problems:

Discipline problems can be very frustrating to a teacher. However, there are several techniques that the teacher should have in his/ her repertoire that can help the teacher cope with disciplinary problems.
-Teachers are expected to set clear standards of behavior for students (Standards should be realistic.), along with consequences.
-Teachers should negotiate the rules with the students
-Teachers are highly recommended to keep the classroom activities attractive and interesting
-Teachers are expected to plan their lessons to cater for different learning styles
-It is highly recommended for the teachers to avoid shouting.
-A teacher is required to have knowledge about the students’ background.
-Teachers assign the students challenging tasks
-Teachers should be consistent and fair so the students trust them.
-Teacher are expected to respect the students as individuals.
-Teachers should praise the students’ performance to motivate them to work hard.
- Teachers should work on creating a safe learning environment and a positive classroom climate to minimize disruption.
-Teachers should set a good example for students to follow. They should watch out their moves in the class because children learn through observing others.
- Withitness: The teacher should activate all her channels and know what is going on in the class.
It is the ability to know what is happening in the class all the time. Withitness helps the teacher to effectively manage the class.
